Ronald J. Berenson, M.D. 


Dr. Berenson has nearly 20 years of leadership experience in start-up roles in the biopharmaceutical industry. Most recently, he served as a consultant to the biopharmaceutical industry with a focus on drug development in hematology and oncology. From 1996-2005, Dr. Berenson was the founder, President and CEO and member of the Board of Directors of Xcyte Therapies, a NASDAQ-listed biopharmaceutical company (XCYT) developing therapeutic products in hematology and oncology. From 1989 to 1995, Dr. Berenson was the founder, Executive Vice President, Chief Medical and Scientific Officer and member of the Board of Directors of CellPro, a NASDAQ-listed biotechnology company (CPRO), which developed and commercialized therapeutic products in hematology and oncology. From 1984-1989, he was a member of the faculty of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Calypso Medical Technologies, a cancer therapeutics company. He is an expert in hematopoietic stem cells and the field of bone marrow transplantation, and performed the first stem cell transplants in the world. Dr. Berenson is a board-certified medical oncologist, who trained at Stanford University and received his M.D. from Yale Medical School and his B.S. from Stanford University.



Fred Dotzler 


Mr. Dotzler is a Managing Director of De Novo Ventures. Prior to co-founding De Novo, Mr. Dotzler was a General Partner at Medicus Venture Partners, a venture capital firm he founded in 1989. Prior to Medicus, he was a General Partner of Crosspoint Venture Partners. Among investments he has made during his career in venture capital are the following: medical device - Advanced Surgical Intervention, Biosite, Microvention, SenoRx (NASDAQ: SENO) and Vitaphore; biopharmaceutical - Anergen, Applied Molecular Evolution, Bayhill, Favrille, HemaQuest, Oncomed, Point Biomedical, Renovis, Tularik and Vitreo Retinal Technologies; drug delivery - Anesta, Nektar; healthcare information - Informed Medical Communications, Omnicell.


Previously he held management positions in sales, marketing, acquisitions, and manufacturing with Millipore Corporation, Merrimack Laboratories, G.D. Searle & Co., and IBM. Mr. Dotzler received a B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Iowa State University, an M.B.A. degree from the University of Chicago, and an advanced degree in Economics from the University of Louvain, Belgium. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Bayhill Therapeutics, Cartilix, HemaQuest, Point Biomedical, SenoRx, Talima, and Vitreo Retinal Technologies



Bryan Dunnivant, Chairman 


Mr. Dunnivant has more than 25 years experience in the biopharmaceutical industry and has held leadership roles across a wide range of functional areas including finance, strategy, R&D, international operations, new business development and venture investing. He joined Lilly Ventures in 2005 and in October 2007 he led the investment in HemaQuest Pharmaceuticals and now serves as the company's board chairman. In addition, he currently represents Lilly Ventures on the boards of portfolio companies including Bayhill Therapeutics, Fasat Track Systems, and MedManage Systems. Prior to joining Lilly Ventures, he was Chief Operating Officer for e.Lilly, a division of Lilly focused on innovation, new business models, and spin-outs. During his tenure at e.Lilly, Mr. Dunnivant was involved in the founding, startup, incubation, and financing of a number of new life science businesses including Indigo BioSystems, Maaguzi, and Collaborative Drug Discovery. Mr. Dunnivant received his Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois and a Masters of Business Administration from Butler University.



Ivor Royston M.D. 


Dr. Royston is a Founding Managing Partner of Forward Ventures. Dr. Royston has been involved in the biotechnology industry in San Diego from its inception in 1978 with the founding of Hybritech, Inc. (later acquired by Eli Lilly) and with the founding of Idec Pharmaceuticals in 1986 (which later merged with Biogen).


Dr. Royston has been instrumental in the formation, financing, and development of numerous successful public biotechnology companies, including: Applied Molecular Evolution (acquired by Eli Lilly); Combichem (acquired by DuPont); Corixa (acquired by GlaxoSmithKline); Favrille; Genesys Therapeutics (merged with Somatix and acquired by Cell Genesys); and Triangle Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Gilead).


Currently, Dr. Royston is the founding Chairman of Targegen in San Diego, and was elected Chairman of Morphotek in Exton, PA. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Avalon Pharmaceuticals, and Favrille, where he was the founding Chairman.


Dr. Royston was previously the Founding President and CEO of the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (1990-2000) and on the faculty of the medical school and cancer center of the University of California, San Diego (1977-1990). He received his B.A. (1967) and M.D. (1970) degrees from the Johns Hopkins University and completed post-doctoral training in internal medicine and medical oncology at Stanford University. In 1997, President Clinton appointed Dr. Royston to a six-year term on the National Cancer Advisory Board.



George Stamatoyannopoulos, M.D., D.Sc. 


Dr. Stamatoyannopoulos has more than 400 research publications and is widely acknowledged as a leader of the field of hemoglobinopathies. For over four decades his research has focused on the delineation of the cellular and molecular processes by which hemoglobin switches from fetal to adult hemoglobin during development. At the University of Washington, Dr. Stamatoyannopoulos is Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Pathology and Genome Sciences, and the Director of the Markey Molecular Medicine Center. Dr. Stamatoyannopoulos has been the recipient of several honors and awards, including the William Dameshek Prize and the Stratton Medal of the American Society of Hematology, the Metcalf Prize of the International Society of Experimental Hematology, and the Levine Prize of the American Society of Clinical Pathology. He has served as President of the American Society of Hematology and he is the founding President of the American Society of Gene Therapy. He has founded two other biotechnology companies, Targeted Genetics and Regulome. Dr. Stamatoyannopoulos received his M.D. from the University of Athens and his Doctor of Science degree from the University of Athens. His post-graduate training was in the Department of Clinical Therapeutics at the University of Athens Medical School and at the Royal Hellenic Research Foundation.



Wayne I. Roe, Director 


Mr. Roe is a Managing Director of InCube Ventures, an investment firm focused on innovative medical technologies that can significantly improve clinical outcomes. Prior to this position, Mr. Roe was the Founding Officer and Chairman of Covance Health Economics and Outcomes Services, Inc. from 1988 through 1999. Before this position, he served as Vice President for Economic and Health Policy for the Health Industry Manufacturers Association. He has been an advisor on health policy and medical innovation to the U.S. Congress, the Medicare Program and the Blue Cross Association. Mr. Roe has pioneered the field of new product reimbursement planning and is widely recognized as America's foremost expert on third party payment and pharmacoeconomic strategy for new medical devices, diagnostics, drugs, and biotechnology products. Mr. Roe played a major role in developing and executing successful commercialization and reimbursement strategies for EPO, GCSF, Alfa Interferon, Ceredase, Enbrel, MRI imaging, laparoscopic surgical procedures, and scores of other blockbuster life sciences innovations. Mr. Roe received a M.A. in Political Economy from the State University of New York and an M.A. in Economics from the University of Maryland. Mr. Roe was a magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa 1972 graduate in economics from Union College.


Mr. Roe currently serves on the Boards of Directors of ISTA Pharmaceuticals Inc., Aderis Pharmaceuticals, Favrille Inc., Intrapace, Inc., and Spinal Modulation Inc. He is a strategic advisor to the Maryland Life Sciences Incubator, and serves on the executive committee of the Maryland Angels Investment Fund.
