HemaQuest is also evaluating several additional short chain fatty acid (SCFA) derivatives to treat a variety of hematologic disorders. Several of these compounds have shown therapeutic activities in stimulating red blood cell and white blood cell production in the laboratory as well as animal models. These could prove useful to treat not only hemoglobinopathies, but also other hematologic disorders, such as anemia and neutropenia, which is a decrease in neutrophils, the infection-fighting white blood cells that occurs with chemotherapy and radiation.
